Math lessons

My daughter is attending math classes for five Saturdays under the 2011 *MTAP-DepED NCR Saturday Program in Mathematics.

The program aims at giving students the chance to do Mathematics with some explorations without the threat of test, giving an intensive review of the work of the previous year and prepare the Grade 6 to 4th for 1st year and college respectively.

My daughter is interested to learn more about math and practice new techniques to work on her mathematical skills. Although my daughter is not inclined to take up tech careers like Data Mining Specialist Jobs that may require dealing with numbers, she wants to do well in math to maintain good grades.

*(MTAP) Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines.

A little history about MTAP: This is an organization of Mathematics teachers working together to promote excellence in Mathematics education. First organized in 1976 by Fr. Wallance G. Campbell, S.J. at the Ateneo de Manila University, MTAP has honed the mathematical skills of promising students through its Math Competition. For years, it has closely worked together with the Department of Education, enjoying strong support from the DepEd Regional Directors and Division Math Supervisors.

Educational materials

I was half-way through arranging the school materials that I will send to my Marce Jadey’s Paper and Pencils for a Cause program when I saw some of my son’s broken toys placed in the same cabinet. My son used to like those toys when he was younger. He plays with them even when the toys are broken or some parts are missing. He’s good at dismantling and connecting tiny pieces of puzzles and toys. I bet he can be good at motor home repair too because he can fix his sister’s doll house connecting the tiny parts together. Anyway, I’m reserving the weekend to complete the school materials and hope to add more items.

Dad’s job

One time my son was asked by his English teacher about his dad’s job. My son said his dad is working in a publishing company as pre-press manager. The teacher didn’t ask further. But for my son’s information, I explain to him that part of his dad’s job is to maintain an archive of all printed materials in portable digital file (PDF). These files are distilled and converted into PDF. You can just imagine how big these files are and retrieval is difficult without a systematized method. My husband is using a pdf page counter to manage the PDF archive. With a good PDF management system, file retrieval will be a breeze.
